Hey Teen Life Family,

1. All Play and No Work. Whoever
believes this one has never hosted a Junior High Lock-In. As in any
ministry, working with youth has many unaccounted hours that the
members never see. They see the cookout, but miss the 1 a.m. call from
the police station. They see the beach retreat, but miss the flat tire
along the way. They see the pizza party, but miss the 10 hour drive
back from the work camp.

Tip: Combat this myth by keeping the congregation more informed about
mission trips and service projects and less informed on the “fun”
activities (since that’s all they think you do anyway).

2. Keeping the Church Informed
Will Solve Any Misconceptions. Don’t use this as an excuse to
keep people in the dark, but there will be some who think the worst of
you and your ministry no matter how hard you try to explain it. Some
will think the lock-in is a sex-in. Some will think the contemporary
praise is Satan’s tool.

Tip: Combat this myth by thoroughly explaining the purpose behind each
event.

3. Working with Christians Is
Easy. Christians can be some of the most unforgiving, harsh,
and judgmental people you will ever encounter.

Tip: Combat this myth by being like Christ no matter how unChrist-like
some of the people you work with may seem.
Hey Teen Life Family,

Summer is here and we are sure that you have a lot of exciting
activities planned for your groups. There will be mission trips, game
days, summer camps, and maybe even a day at Six Flags.

Along with all of these great activities for teens comes a little
stress for you, the youth leader. We want to help you alleviate a
portion of the stress.

Beginning Wednesday, June 1st, and every Wednesday through August 31st,
we will provide you with a “Character Builder” lesson. All you have to
do is go to the Teen Life website and click on the calendar or click on
the Character Builder section and get your lesson.

Here is a sample of the lesson you will receive each Wednesday
during June, July, and August.

<a

It is our prayer that this summer will be a great time of spiritual
growth for you and your group. Please know that you are being prayed
for and we ask that you pray for us.

Keep Praying,

Verify the Source. Did
the desire come from God or from you? Moses knew the vision was from
God. Abraham knew the vision was from God. Paul knew the vision was
from God. Nehemiah knew the vision was from God.

Inspiring. Does the
vision make you want to move? Moses’ vision made him want to stay put,
while Abraham’s vision literally made him move. The shared vision
should result in action. It should create energy and the desire of not
resting until the vision becomes reality.

Scriptural. Does the
vision correlate with God’s will? One of the most innocent ways we can
cast a less than scriptural vision is by exalting our name. For
example, we may decide on making the name of our group known throughout
the city, so when youth ministry is mentioned our group is mentioned.
That sounds like a great goal, but it that God’s will? Does He want our
name to be known or His name to be know? That may appear picky or
walking a fine line, but don’t we think that the Lord wants every
vision to match with Scripture?

Instruction. Details of
how to accomplish the vision should coincide with proclaiming the
vision. We are only giving a pep talk if we ignite the heart with a lot
of ideas that have no formula. Jesus told the apostles to “Go into all
the world and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to obey everything
I have commanded you for I am with your always, even until the very end
of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). The Lord cast the vision and told
them how to accomplish it.

Often. Without sounding
like a skipping CD, regularly restate the vision. The Hebrews writer
challenges us to “fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of
our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). When we lose sight of the goal we get
distracted and discouraged.

Need. Does the vision
fill a void? There’s no need to form and cast a vision just to say your
ministry has one. The result of the statement should fill an emptiness,
heal a heart, connect a community, or anything along the lines of a
need.

Change. Will lives be
changed? Hundreds of books have been written on making successful
changes. They talk about how reluctant people are to change and how
difficult it is to get some people to change. The strength of a well
crafted vision statement is that it makes people want to change. Teens
and parents are not against change as long as it’s a proven need. A
vision that results in closer family relationships or a deeper walk
with God, will be welcomed. Those accepting the vision would understand
a cost is involved and will be willing to pay because the end result
promises a changed life.

Alive. Does the vision
need dusting? We created a vision statement for our group that sounded
great. All the leaders were excited and we knew we had a God vision
that would take the ministry to the next level for the Lord.
Unfortunately, a year later nothing had really happened with the
statement. It contained all the right elements and we repeated it
often, but it just died. Learn from my experience, recasting a dead
vision is worthless.

Sharpen. Are there
uncertain or needless wording? A vision should be tight and clearly
understood by all. God said to Noah, “Build and ark and do it like
this.” When God finished sharing the vision with Noah, he didn’t say,
“Um, Lord, what are you talking about?”

Thirst. Do people feel
like they can’t live without the vision? “Without a vision the people
perish” (Proverbs 29:18). The literal translation means that
without a word from God people waste away. A God-sized vision
will call for His refreshing of a parched life.

“Vision is born in the heart of the man and woman who is caught between
the tension of what could be and what should be.” - Andy Stanley,
Visioneering

While buying tickets for “Revenge of the Sith,” the teen worker behind
together. You’ll understand the complete saga.”

I’ve got to admit the young dude was right. The answers were revealed.
Such as…

Why is Darth Vader so angry?

Why does he need that breathing equipment?

How do Luke and Leah get separated?

How did the Sith Lord get so ugly?

Why do C3PO and R2D2 seem to have no memory of the
dark events of episode III in episode IV?

Why did Annikin change teams?

And a whole lot more.

Have you ever had questions about YOUR story; about YOUR
life? Here we are in the middle of our
episode with a lot of questions unanswered.

Scripture says that Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. He
has all the answers. He knows the outcomes. 1 John 3 says we will
become like him. Do you think that means that one day we will have all
the answers?

What is my purpose?

God, why did you create us if you knew we would sin
and it would cost you your son?

Why do bad things happen to good people?

Why didn’t that teen ever turn around?

Why didn’t you step in and help ________?

Did Adam and Eve have a belly button?

And a whole lot more…

Think about that mental list of questions you’ve thought
about asking God. They will all be answered. Everything will tie
together. The story will be complete. And YOU play a very big role
(much larger than you know).

Wow! Spring Break is here and
Summer is right around the corner!

Here’s a brief checklist for upcoming trips…

1. Determine the cost. Check the
prices of hotels, airlines, buses, rentals, fees, etc. Don’t
let an unforeseen cost hurt the trip or take out the budget. Look in
the phonebook and call all the businesses that relate to your activity
and compare prices. If possible ride out to their lot and check out the
rentals personally to make sure their “good deal” isn’t a bad deal for
you.

If your planning will require rental away from home, use a travel agent
or do your own research online with a company like Travelocity
(www.travelocity.com). Companies like these will allow you to compare
prices between several companies providing the same service.

2. Acquire all necessary forms
and have them signed. What forms are needed for the trip
you are taking? Medical release forms? Permission slips? You will want
to get signatures, insurance card numbers, and a notary seal in some
cases. Check your state laws to determine exactly what forms you need
for each trip. If not expressly stated on your form, you will also need
emergency phone numbers, medication allergies, and any other
information a parent may feel is needed to protect their child in the
case of an emergency.

3. Use commitment contracts. Hold
teens accountable by specifically stating the do’s and don’t’s of the
trip. Make a list of all requirements and have teens and parents sign
the contract. This type of commitment will help deter surprises and
statements like, “I didn’t know it was against the rules to pull the
fire alarm at the hotel.” A commitment contract lets parents and teens
know that trips are not “do what I want” outings.

4. Check maintenance on all
transportation. This may come as a shock to most of you, but
I’ve actually heard about a few church vans and buses that broke down
on a trip. Can you believe it? Even more amazing is that the ministers
in fault actually admitted that they didn’t get the vehicles checked
out before leaving town.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get gasoline, oil, tires pumped,
etc. Most church vehicles have enough problems to warrant being in the
shop for a week, so plan ahead and keep maintenance up to par. We have
enough headaches on the trip without having to worry about mechanical
problems.

5. Collect money. I know
most of you couldn’t believe that some church vans break down, but I’m
going to take a risk and tell you something else you might not believe.
Some teens sign up for events and then back out a couple of days
before, leaving the church with the bill. To prevent this from
happening to you, require teens pay up front before they are allowed to
register for an activity or trip. Let it be known that the money
is nonrefundable and if a teen drops out, the money is still needed to
pay for the spot for which they registered.

Members get the other five on the list here…

TEAM WORK

As a youth worker we are either volunteers or work with volunteers.
Whatever the case, we need to put together a team and train them to
lead our teens in their relationship with God and His Son.

Below are listed a few suggestions to help get you become a great team
leader, if you are not already one.

Keep in mind: You can
learn leadership skills. You do not have to be a born leader to be
effective.

Know your team personally.
It may not be possible for you to see all of your team members on a
daily basis but you can stay in touch by phone or e-mail. Let them know
you care and that they are important to you and your team.

Meet with your team regularly. This
depends on the upcoming events but it would be great to meet with them
on a weekly basis. If most of your team members are volunteers, try to
meet with them a few minutes before or after church to keep them from
making a special trip to another meeting. Meeting on a regular basis
sends a message to them that you are serious about your ministry.

Provide proper training. Your
team may be used in many different ways and will probably need some
type of training. They may need to be trained in the art of chaperoning
or planning a meal for fifty teens. Whatever you want them to do make
sure you train them in that area.

Motivate your team. A
card in the mail or an unexpected phone call goes a long ways in
motivating a team member. Let them know that you are praying for them
to have good physical and spiritual health. Thank them often for what
they do for God and His teens.

Thank, praise and socialize with
team members. I really do not think this needs much of an
explanation. Spend as much time as possible with each member.

Constantly communicate.
Always keep your team members informed of upcoming events, teen
situations and prayer request. Communication is key in any
organization, especially when a lot of people and coordination are
involved.

Delegate. Team members
need to learn to delegate as much as you do. You may have a team member
who is in charge of Vacation Bible School. That person will need to
delegate others to help and even be in charge of certain areas.

Empower team members.
Empower your team members to take control of certain areas. This does
not mean that you will leave them hanging out on a limb alone. It
simply means that you are training and trusting them to get a certain
area of ministry done.

Learn to accept criticism.
I have been doing youth work for years and I still make a ton of
mistakes. Be able to take it when someone criticizes you or your work.
If it is justified, change your habits. If you need to explain why you
did what you did, do so.

Think ahead. It is
comforting to know that your team is more willing to work and relax
around you when they know you are planning ahead and not waiting until
the last minute and shooting from the hip.

It is our prayer that the above suggestions will help you get started
with a great leadership team.

Expect
Greatness not Perfection.

When people say the words “young people” they are really saying
“youngpeople.” One word, as a noun. Try it, out loud say young people
the way you would normally say it. Why does this matter? Because when
you say “youngpeople” instead of young people, you change the meaning
of the words.

Youngpeople are a kind of quazi-human creature that are outside of the
realm of normal expectations. On one hand we don’t expect a whole lot
from them. We’re just glad they come to church and don’t have drugs in
their pocket. On the other hand we expect perfection from them. “The
‘youngpeople’ should be the supreme example of what a person should be
as a Christian. Their friends and family and the entire world are
watching them and may be turned away from God if these “youngpeople”
don’t do it exactly right.” I am exaggerating (a little) but you get
the point.

Let’s look at the term the way we should, though. They are young, and
they are people. I’m not trying to be sarcastic and yes, I know this is
a simple concept, but it could change the way you relate to your
“youngpeople.”

They are young. This means they aren’t going to have a lot of wisdom
because they haven’t lived long enough to develop it. It means they are
going to trust freely (for a while) and trust the wrong people and the
right people. They are going to be fiercely loyal to their ideas, their
music, their friends and the other things that make up their identity.
They are going to be reckless and impulsive. The reason they are is
because they don’t have a lot to lose. All of the investment has been
from their parents. That’s not wrong or abnormal, it’s youth. Think
maybe God designed them like that so they would be willing to go out
and change the world? Do you remember when you thought you could do
anything? They are going to be passionate. Your job isn’t to shut this
all down and make them like you, they are not miniature adults, they
don’t think like you because they don’t have all of the risks you have.
Your job is to help them harness all of this energy and power, yes
power, and point them in the right direction so they can make a
difference in their world.

They are people. They are going to do amazing things, normal things and
incredibly stupid things. They are going to be subject to their
emotions, peer pressure (you still are), ups and downs and everything
else everybody goes through. Don’t put them in the “youngpeople”
category and limit them to that paradigm. They are people, created by
God for a purpose with a capacity for greatness, but the propensity for
failure. Expect greatness, but don’t expect perfection.
