Teens and Oral Sex

By: Paul Evans

It’s been called an “epidemic” youth groups – oral sex.

The standing thought is this: As long as intercourse doesn’t happen then anything else goes. A lot of teens agree. Many parents agree. And even some youth workers agree.

We would be the first to tell you that we are not trained in the art of semantic dissertation, or have the ability to argue detailed theological debates. So…we’ll share what the Bible says with a few comments. There will not be any cool tactics to put the whammy on a teen’s sex drive.

(Long Side note: Some want to scare teens with the threat of STDs, or talk to them about morality, or how they will be hurt psychologically. While there’s nothing wrong with that, we need to be talking about sin. If a teen has more respect for an STD than God, we have helped their body, but not their soul.)

What does the Bible say specifically about Oral Sex?

Nothing.

What does the Bible say about the way we view sexuality?

A lot.

1. Gen. 9:22 – Cannan saw Noah naked and got cursed for it. Whew that’s a tough penalty for just looking.

2. Ex. 19:15 – the people were told to abstain from sexual relations. Why? Because it makes us lose focus of the spiritual.

3. 2 Sam. 11 –David got in a lot of trouble, and it started with a look.

There’s a lot more in the O.T., but let’s look at just a few thoughts from the N.T.

1. Matt. 5:28 – Jesus compares looking lustfully with adultery.

2. Col. 3:5 – we are supposed to put to death any type of sexuality that is not godly. We think an execution of unholy sex acts is a strong stance, right?

Here are two of the most powerful passages…

Ephesians 5:3 - But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.

Now we read that and it’s clear, but teens read “intercourse into the passage. The word hint I the key. There is no way oral sex doesn’t hint to sexual immorality. Or the dirty jokes they tell. Or the picts. and movies they downloaded from the net.

1 Thess. 4:2-4 - For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable.

How far is too far sexually? Anything that is…

1) Out of God’s will. Is it God’s will for teens to have oral sex?

2) Prevents being transformed into the image of Christ. Does oral sex help teens transform?

3) Fails to avoid sexual immorality. Does oral sex avoid sexual immorality or increase it?

4) Creates a lack of control. Does oral sex help a teen learn to control his/her body for the Lord?

5) Unholy or not honorable. Does oral sex help teens set themselves apart for God’s work? Is it something so honorable they would talk about it openly with their parents or in front of the church?

Bottom line:

Oral sex is a sin; just like telling a dirty joke, or looking at porn, or lying. Teens, or whoever, can try to justify or play games if they want, but the Word makes it clear.

This article isn’t an “every facet” answer. It’s doesn’t go into every detail. And it doesn’t have too. God set the standard of holiness and that’s what we’re called to be.

Blessings!!
