Spiritual Growth Checkup

By: Paul Evans

1. How much time, or how often, do I pray each day? As ministers we spend a lot time time talking to others. Do we spend a lot of time talking to God? Do you spend seconds, minutes, or hours talking to God daily? Fill in the blank with your answer.____________

It may be that you don’t keep up with the amount of time, but the number of times. So how often to do you pray? Place an “x” in the blank that fits you. ___ less than once a day. ___ Once a day. ___ Two or three times a day. ___Four to six times a day. ___ I feel like I am in a continual prayer with God.

2. How much time am I spending in God’s Word? Forget it. Studying for lessons doesn’t count unless you are purposely seeking a deeper walk with God from those studies.

Nothing can substitute for time alone with God. Use the margin to write down what your last personal Bible study was about, and how you grew from it.

3. How many people am I currently trying to win for Jesus? Write their names here______________________________________________________

Jesus made it obvious that He came to seek and save the lost. As followers of Jesus we can do no less. Stay spiritually healthy by helping others come to know the Great Physician and receive His healing.

4. What is my favorite soul-winning memory? Part of staying in shape is remembering what it felt like, and remembering what you did when you were in your best shape. What feels better than knowing someone came to Jesus because of God’s effort through you?

Use the margin and write a few notes about a favorite conversion memory. Was it with the kid that decided to accept Christ at an extinguished bonfire at 4 a.m.? Was it baptizing a new believer in the middle of January in laceType>LakelaceType> laceName>WinnotongalaceName>? Keep in touch with those special moments to keep you motivated in the present.

5 What does Christ and His church mean to me? Get a sheet of paper and take about thirty minutes for this question. Reread the crucifixion story. Read I Corinthians 12 about the body of Christ and let every positive thought about Christ and His bride flow out of your heart and onto the paper.

6. How often do I pray for and make positive comments about my church leaders? ________________________ Every minister is in a different situation, but who hasn’t gotten frustrated with the leaders at some point? You think you might get praised, but you garnish ridicule. You were sure this was the year for the raise, and it never surfaced in the budget meeting.

Stop right now and pray for your leaders. Pray for their wisdom and your understanding. Ask God to continue to work through those present in leadership as well as raise up new leaders who will extend the kingdom.

7. How deep is my relationship with God? Are you just staying afloat, or searching the spiritual depths? This is more of an intimacy question than a knowledge question. Some people know a lot about God, but don’t know God. Shade in the spiritual depth finder below from top to bottom to establish where you feel you are spiritually. Later in the book you’ll get 10 ways to go deeper with God.

8. How much effort do I exert in helping teens lead their friends to Christ? ______________________ Providing tools for teens to evangelize is another way you may indirectly lead someone to Jesus. Create a sense of urgency in your group about the lost. We need to guard against a “take them or leave them” attitude. Again, the Lord came to “seek” the lost. The lost didn’t just stumble onto the Savior, He went looking for them. Do the same with the teens in your group.

9. How often do I make excuses for not doing what I am called to do? Moses really didn’t want the job. And he learned how to lose an argument with God very quickly. Yet we tend to follow his lead. Are you reluctant to follow when the Lord calls?

What is the last thing you knew God wanted you to do, but you offered an excuse? ______________________________________________

What excuse did you use? _________________________________________________________

What have you learned? _________________________________________________________

10. How often do I take a sabbatical, or spiritual retreat alone? Mark 1 gives us a day in the life of Jesus. He taught and healed the people. What do you think He did the next morning? Did He get up ready for another hard day? Did He wait at the door step for the praise of the people? Verse 35 reads, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and when off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

Since our Lord knew the value of time alone with God, shouldn’t we? When was the last date of your private spiritual retreat or sabbatical? __________________

If it has been a while or not at all, start making plans today.

Well, how did you do? This isn’t a pass or fail check-up, but maybe it will help make you aware of your spiritual position.
