Real physical batteries. My Palm Pilot kept giving me the “replace batteries” signal. So naturally I yelled to my wife, Marla, “Baby girl, do we have any AAA batteries? I know I bought some.” “I don’t know where they are. Where did you put them when you bought them?” “If I knew that I wouldn’t be asking.” Ah, love. Back to the batteries. By the time I bought some, my Pilot died (fortunately I had hot-synced recently). Okay, what’s the maximizer here? First, Back up your stuff regularly. Do it right when you think, “I probably need to back up my stuff.” (That might be the Lord letting you know your computer is about to crash.) Second, keep extra stuff for your stuff on hand. Extra batteries, extra tape, extra snacks… Third, remember where you keep the extra stuff for your stuff. How much time do we spend looking for incidentals? Answer: a lot! Right when you store it make a mental note by saying to yourself out loud, “Alright self. I’m putting these batteries in the drawer next to the bed. Did you get that? Next to the bed.” Or better yet, put it in your Palm Pilot.
